My wife Zan, and I have made a very big decision. We have decided to move back to Bainbridge Island. We enjoyed our time in Portland (especially being close to our youngest daughter) but with the few years that we likely have left, we decided it will be best to be back where we belong.

It won’t change anything about our Foundation work except it will make me closer to Western Washington University where I will continue to work on our Financial Literacy Program. It will change our mailing address. Our new mailing address is: P.O. Box 10418, Bainbridge Island, Washington 98110

My wife swears this is our last home. I’m planning on that but, of course, things can change.

At dinner last night our daughter asked about making an investment in real estate, as a business, not as a personal home. I sent her this article (Truth, Lies, and Hype: Sorting Through the Messaging Around Real Estate Investing) from Truth Teller, Jim Dahle,

As usual Jim is fair and balanced in his report.

We continue to look to the academic community to find ways to improve the process of saving and investing. Here is an article regarding a Wharton study on the impact a regular “nudge.”

NGPF.ORG: A Go-To Resource for Raising Money-Smart Kids

If you’re a parent who wants to raise financially confident kids—but isn’t sure where to start—Next Generation Personal Finance (NGPF.org) is one of the most valuable resources you can bookmark today. Their mission says it all:
“Teach money. Change lives. Everything you need to teach personal finance with joy and confidence, 100% free.”

That promise isn’t just marketing language. NGPF delivers clear, engaging, age-appropriate content that makes money conversations feel approachable rather than intimidating. Whether your child is in middle school, high school, or preparing for adulthood, NGPF helps families normalize talking about money early and often.

One Simple Habit That Sparks Big Conversations: Question of the Day

One of the easiest ways parents can use NGPF—without needing a lesson plan or finance background—is by subscribing to their free Question of the Day. These short, discussion-based prompts are designed to get students (and families) thinking and talking about real-world money decisions.

That’s what makes it so powerful for parents: the questions are timely, relevant, and tested in real classrooms. They work just as well at the dinner table or during a car ride.

And you won’t be alone in using it.
“Over 100,000 professional teachers use this as a source of ideas to get their students talking about something of interest.”

Why NGPF Belongs in Every Parent’s Toolkit

NGPF meets families where they are. It focuses on realistic decisions, builds confidence through conversation, and removes the pressure to “get it perfect.” By simply subscribing to the Question of the Day and sharing one question at a time, parents can help their kids develop financial awareness that lasts a lifetime.

If you’re looking for a free, trusted, and teacher-approved way to support your child’s financial education, NGPF.org is an easy yes.

"Thank you Paul and Chris. your research has made me a better investor. It helped me stick with a plan and actually understand diversification. I always wondered how a 100% S&P portfolio is considered diversified when roughly 40% sits in the same 10 stocks."
