"If you can plug your ears to every attempt (by anyone) to predict what the markets will do, you will outperform nearly every other investor alive over the long run. Only the mantra of “I don’t know and I do care” will get you there.”
Jason Zweig.

As an unpaid volunteer for our Foundation I tried to take an unpaid vacation day today. I actually spent two hours with Daryl and Chris this morning talking about our recording next week.

The video/podcast will address the importance and relevance of past return results. I hope the conversation will be helpful for all of you who are investing with a commitment to “stay the course.”

I wish we had recorded our planning conversation. I always learn something when I talk to Chris and Daryl. I hope you do too!

6 reasons active management is a bad idea for your investments

2 Investment Decisions Guaranteed to Change Your Financial Future

When: Jul 13, 2024 from 09:00 to 10:30 (PT)
Associated with AAII Puget Sound Chapter

Few equity styles generate as much love and hate as small-cap value. It boasts impressive long-term returns, but the ride can be rocky. The silver lining to that dark cloud is diversification. Portfolios that include an allocation to small-cap value have increased returns more than they've increased risk and been more resilient. This presentation looks at small cap value performance from seven different points of view. Come see how small-cap value can help in accumulation or retirement and the easiest ways to get and use it for a lifetime.

To help you make the most out of this event, you can download some free resources from the Merriman website:

We’reTalking Millions by Paul Merriman

2 Funds for Life by Chris Pedersen

What you will learn:

1. Why small-cap value deserves a place in your portfolio

2. How and why you need to right-size your small-cap value allocation

3. What to expect when it's combined with a target-date fund in accumulation and retirement

4. How to choose small-cap value funds with the highest expected returns

Paul starts the podcast discussing the upcoming (July 13, 2024) presentation for AAII Puget Sound Chapter (9-10:30). Chris Pedersen and Paul will present, “2 Investment Decisions Guaranteed to Change Your Financial Future.” Here is a link for more information and to sign up for this presentation.

Today’s podcast is a discussion of the latest research from Daryl Bahls, Director of Analytics for The Merriman Financial Education Foundation. Paul believes these new tables are likely the best teaching tool he has found to give investors a realistic idea of the future sequence of returns.

While Paul focuses on several of the 20 slides in the attachment, more of these will be discussed next week with Daryl and Chris.

Paul starts his discussion with his latest update of the Equity Asset Classes (1928-2023) table.

He then explains why Daryl’s Quilt Charts are a better way for investors to understand the sequence of returns they are likely to experience.

Paul asks listeners to send him questions from the slide deck so they can be addressed in next week's podcast with Daryl and Chris.

"Your programs and research have helped me understand the value of factor diversification and strategies for safe withdrawal rates, an incredible gift in these times.

I have sent your book to every young person I know under the age of 35 (that’s what I’m calling young these days LOL).

And you are an inspiration to me about how to use our experiences and gifts to be a blessing to others in our later years.”
