In the coming months we will have a lot to say about artificial intelligence (AI) and how investors can call on its capabilities to help make intelligent financial decisions. In the meantime I would like to share how we used AI to put together the description of my comments in our latest podcast.

After I recorded the podcast on GarageBand, and uploaded the file to Dropbox, Dropbox created the transcript. Then in a matter of seconds, ChatGPT used that transcript to create the podcast copy that you will see below in the podcast section of the newsletter.

It’s absolutely amazing!

But there’s more:

ChatGPT took the comments that I made during the podcast and turned them into a Q&A format. You'll see that below also in our Q&A section.

But there’s even more.:
ChatGPT searched for things I said that could be turned into stand alone quotes. They are below also.

Q&A

Q: What is one of the biggest challenges for do-it-yourself investors?
Answer:
One of the biggest challenges is managing expectations for returns and not letting recent performance dictate future expectations. Many investors struggle with recency bias, wanting future returns to mirror recent positive returns, which is not how long-term investing works.

Q: How long does it take to see a premium from small-cap value investments?
A: According to academic studies, a high probability of seeing a premium for small-cap value investments typically requires a time horizon of 20 to 30 years.

Q: Why do some small-cap value indexes underperform others?
A: Different indexes use different formulas to identify value. For example, the CRISP index often outperforms the Russell 2000 small-cap value index due to differences in methodology. Investors may unknowingly invest in historically underperforming indexes.

Q: What is the difference in returns between the S&P 500 and small-cap value from 2000 to present?
A: From 2000 to the present, the S&P 500 had a compound annual return of 7.7%, while the Dimensional Fund's small-cap value fund had a return of 10.3%. This represents a 2.6% annual premium for small-cap value.

Q: What advice does Paul Merriman give to young investors?
A:He advises young investors to invest in equities, ideally splitting investments between the S&P 500 and small-cap value. He emphasizes the importance of starting early and staying consistent, even with small contributions like $100 monthly into a Roth IRA.

Q: What does Paul suggest about managing market downturns?
A: He advises preparing for market downturns as they are inevitable. Investors need to stay the course and not make emotional decisions during bear markets, as long-term performance often recovers and rewards patience.

Q: What is the significance of the four-fund strategy?
A: The four-fund strategy, which includes small-cap value, large-cap value, small-cap blend, and large-cap blend (S&P 500), has historically outperformed the S&P 500 alone. It provides diversification and a slightly higher return, even without rebalancing.

Q: How does Paul encourage financial literacy among young people?
A: He plans to give a $1,000 Roth IRA investment to a student as part of a presentation to graduating seniors. His goal is to teach them the importance of long-term investing and the potential of equities to grow wealth over decades.

Q:Why does Paul emphasize having “more than enough” for retirement?
A: He believes planning for “more than enough” helps account for unexpected life events, market downturns, and ensures a comfortable and dignified retirement. It also allows for leaving a financial legacy for heirs.

Q: What role does faith play in investing, according to Paul Merriman?
A: Paul describes investing as a faith-based endeavor, where investors must have faith in the long-term performance of their investments despite the uncertainty of future returns.
