"Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs,

and that is the risk of doing nothing." Denis Waitley

Yes, this is the season of tables. Daryl Bahls, our director of analytics, is hard at work building the over 200 tables he updates each year.

Here is what’s coming:

Returns of the major 4 U.S. equity asset classes from 1928-2023
Returns of the U.S. Government bonds from 1928-2023
Quilt charts for the annual returns of the 4 U.S. equity asset classes from 1928-2023
Quilt charts for the annual returns of the combinations of equity asset classes 1928-2023
Buy and hold tables for 10 equity asset classes from 1970-2023
Risk and return data on 8 Sound Investing Portfolios (SIP) 1970-2023
Fine tuning tables showing risk and return data on 8 SIP with a range stock/bond combinations 1970-2023
Accumulation/contribution tables using the SIP 1970-2023
Fixed distribution tables using SIP with combinations of stocks and bonds 1970-2023
Variable distribution tables using SIP with combinations of stocks and bonds 1970-2023
Tell tale charts for S&P and small cap value 1927-2023
Another 10+ tables that reflect a variety of ways to consider risks and returns of owning equities

At the same time as Daryl is putting this all together Chris Pedersen is busy updating his work on target date funds. Not only is he bringing his earlier work up to date, but he has built some new tables that show the impact of fine tuning your target date portfolios using the SIP.

On behalf of all the people who are using these tables I want to thank Daryl and Chris for the many volunteer hours they spend helping you build a better understanding of the relationship of the risk and return of owning stocks and bonds.

This is a busy time for me as well. I will be working with Chris and Daryl to make these tables part of our educational efforts. It is my goal to record a new podcast, a new video and write a new article on each one of these sets of tables.

We are dedicated to helping each one of you become a more productive investor. We will continue to do what we can and recommend others (Truth-Tellers) that we think support the same objective.

In the meantime here is a link to one of the most famous quilt charts in the industry. The Callan Periodic Table of Investment Returns Annual Returns for Key Indices Ranked in Order of Performance (2004–2023) gives students an easy way to learn about the randomness of investing returns. The table tracks 9 different equity and fixed income asset classes. See how many lessons you can find. I have found 10. I’ll point those out in next weeks newsletter.

Lates Podcast- The #1 Reason most investors fail!

In this podcast Paul discusses ten million dollar mistakes investors make, along with the mistake that is the biggest biggest reason he believes most investors fail to achieve the return they deserve. As part of his presentation he references the following two tables.

Table 1 and Table 2. The impact of adding .5% and 1% returns

D1.3 Distribution table taking 3% with annual inflation adjustment

D1.4 Distribution table taking 4% with annual inflation adjustment

Paul reminds listeners to forward copies of our 3 free books for family and friends.

I’m a huge fan of all three of you and this was an excellent episode. I appreciate the work you guys do for others, and, as an aspiring academic in philosophy and the sciences, really appreciate the way evidence-based research forms such an integral part of your advice and content. You include clear, concise explanations and a treasure trove of citations which someone curious but new to markets and finance such as myself can use to happily jump into the deep end. There are a ton of names and faces out there but I think I’m zeroing in on the few whose thoughts and content I don’t want to miss, and you guys are right at the top. Thank you!

Which is better, a cap-weighted or equal-weighted S&P 500 fund?
